Jane was done with work. It was 130am in the morning. She packed up for a late night drive back to her condo in Singapore’s East area. Almost from the moment she got into the lift she felt something was evil this night. At first she could not put a finger on that feeling and attributed it to her growling stomach which was famished. She pressed the button indicating the basement and stood a step back while the lift hummed its way downwards.
Again it came. Just a flash. A sudden feeling of being watched. There’s always something about late nights and dark basements that make women uneasy but this was different. A combination of KNOWING you were watched and FEELING you were followed made for a truly unpleasant lift ride. Women do after all have a strong sense for the paranormal and that’s why all witches were women. There was also something about mirrors. The lift was full of them. Jane was standing tensed in the corner of the lift and was trying not to catch her own reflection in her eyes. She wasn’t a superstitious person, nothing of that sort and neither was she religious person. Heaven and hell made no difference to her so long as she didn’t catch her own reflection grinning at her with and evil knowing smile. STOP! These thoughts were not making her feel better and scenes from previously watched horror movies flashes over her mind clouding it.
A loud “TINGGGGG” followed by the door opening almost made her roll over dead. She was still hyperventilating as she walked towards her car. Loud footsteps reverberated all around her and she kept pretending to look left and right for her car when in fact she was looking over her shoulders to make sure she wasn’t followed. Well she wasn’t. At least not by anyone describable. She almost wishes she was being followed, then at least there was another human within noticeable distance.
She found her car, a sleek Lexus convertible. A cold tingle was forming at the nape of her neck. She planted her buns on the seat and that’s when it happened. It was the kind of moment that seemed surreal. It was the undeniable truth when you see it but fail to register. It happened when she checked her rear view mirror. In the dark back seat seated tall and straight was a lady wearing a bridal veil cloaked in black. Her skin looked ancient like a person of a very old age yet that was that wide big smile frozen on her cheeks.
No words came out of Jane for a few moments. She was gasping and trying look away. She blurted out,”who are you? What do you want with me???!!!”. The creature at the back sat tall and straight without flinching. The smile still frozen. Nothing moved on her face except for a slight breeze in the car.
Jane knew this would be her last moment. She tried opening the doors but it was jammed shut. Another sound caught her attention. It was the handphone ringing. She pulled herself as far as possible away from the creature while she answered. Her husband was on the line….,”hi Jane are ok? You sounded like u seen a ghost. Did u see the wrapped up plastic doll in the car? It’s your birthday surprise!”. Jane cried while she scolded her husband. Accusing him of frightening her.
Before she hung up….relief filled her heart while her husband Told her, “baby I am so sorry….I didn’t know u didn’t like the doll or that it would scared you….after all it’s just a harmless Barbie doll.”
Two seconds after her husband hung up….she realised what his last sentence meant. He had bought her a tiny Barbie for her collection……then what was that huge live sized thing in her back seat???
Two seconds later the real screams began.
